Therapy Demo W/Female College Student: How to Have a Deep Session

Welcome back to our series on therapy microskills, where we analyze sessions from master therapists to teach you their skills.

Today, we are analyzing another clinical breakdown from our deep dive into Tori Olds, Ph.D., focusing on the skill of experiencing—the process of helping a client connect their words to their present internal feelings.

There are three big themes present in this video:

  1. The Experiencing Shift – Why the goal of therapy is to nudge clients away from vague, past-oriented, or external talk and toward a specific, present-moment internal experience.

  2. Managing the "Choice Point" – How to recognize the moment a client is about to "exit" their emotional work by talking about the past, and how to skillfully reflect their immediate experience to keep them in the moment.

  3. Model-Agnostic Deepening – Why experiencing is a foundational skill that works across all models, whether you are using parts work (IFS), somatic awareness, or emotion-focused techniques.
