The Things That Block Client Progress Also Block Us from Business Success

We’re closing down the Private Practice Incubator for several reasons, one of which is more personal to me. I’ve been interested in the contemplative world for many years now, mostly of the Buddhist and Christian variety. As much as I loved the tasks, people, and impact of PPI, I keep feeling called to pursue work directly related to psychospiritual development.

The things that block our clients from progress also block us from business success

Working on my business felt like doing a few years’ worth of therapy. Honestly, it’s one of the most transformational things I’ve done in my life. Succeeding at business required me to face a lot of my stuck beliefs, fears, and doubts. This was really hard work, both physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

When we started working with other therapists on starting their businesses, we found that almost everyone had similar hangups. A lot of our work was very technical—what this CPT code means, which credentialing process to go through, where to find your EIN—but a large portion of it was also helping therapists work through their own stuck beliefs, historic conditioning, and personal wounding.

We didn’t do any full-blown therapy sessions with our mentees and suggested they have their own people to work with. But, we did a lot of space-holding and processing as people completed marketing tasks, set their rates, and explained to us why they “couldn’t” complete the tasks we had promised would increase their chance for success.

The bottom line? Our vulnerable humanity is always with us and inviting us to work through. It’s there with our personal clients, our therapist consultees, and ourselves, every step of the way.

And, with the right support, we can work through it to fundamentally shift how we show up in the world. It’s good news.

Why we’re closing it down

In the past three years, I’ve (Paul) done 9 weeks of silent meditation retreat and another 4 weeks of intensive adult psychological development workshops. These experiences have really changed my life for good and have altered how I show up in my personal and professional life.

I feel a call to step into that work more directly and am letting go of PPI as part of that endeavor. Feel free to reach out if you have interest in learning more about what the world of contemplative, psychospiritual, and developmental growth looks like.
