You Can Just Start A Business and Make Money

We’re closing down the Private Practice Incubator for several reasons, one of which is more personal to me. I’ve been interested in the contemplative world for many years now, mostly of the Buddhist and Christian variety. As much as I loved the tasks, people, and impact of PPI, I keep feeling called to pursue work directly related to psychospiritual development.
You can just start a business and make money
This first lesson may sound mundane, but it has fundamentally changed how I view myself and the world.
Before starting this business with Jordan, I felt like my professional options were limited. As an LMFT, what options did I really have? It felt like signing up for counseling for the rest of my life (which honestly felt fine since I like what I do, but I didn’t want to get stuck in case things changed). Since the Private Practice Incubator, though, the world feels more open and inviting to any big dreams I might have professionally.
Another way I’ll share this lesson is to say: No one is out there making rules about how you can make money. Of course there are legal and social contexts to consider (I’ll touch on those in point 5 below), but in general we felt a sense of open possibility in each phase. A few times during our business, we’d look at each other and say, “So, we can just post this offering and then people will pay us money??” And it worked, including long-term consulting cohorts, 3-hr marketing trainings, weekend hypnosis primers, and a group for practicing clinical skills.
It sounded so surprising and freeing to realize that we can provide meaningful services and make money just from our gumption and intentionality. It’s a simple lesson that I didn’t realize I needed to learn. My former self would have shut down so many of the moves we made in this business because of doubt and other limiting beliefs.
Why we’re closing it down
In the past three years, I’ve (Paul) done 9 weeks of silent meditation retreat and another 4 weeks of intensive adult psychological development workshops. These experiences have really changed my life for good and have altered how I show up in my personal and professional life.
I feel a call to step into that work more directly and am letting go of PPI as part of that endeavor. Feel free to reach out if you have interest in learning more about what the world of contemplative, psychospiritual, and developmental growth looks like.
